Apple har precis släppt iOS 4.0.2 för iPhone 3G, 3GS och 4 samt andra och tredje generationens iPod touch. Enda nyheten är en fix för den PDF-bugg som jailbreakme.com utnyttjade:

Åtgärdar säkerhetsproblem som kan uppstå vid visning av skadliga PDF-filer.

Även om detta stoppar jailbreakme.com är detta en välkommen nyhet generellt sett eftersom säkerhetshålet som jailbreakme.com använde sig av skulle kunna modifieras för att orsaka stor skada bara genom att man besöker en länk till en PDF eller får en PDF i ett mejl.

Vill man bevara möjligheten att utföra jailbreak och upplåsning ska man förstås avvakta med uppdateringen tills dev team säger att den är ok.

Det är inte bara operatörerna som börjar sälja iPhone 4 på fredag. Även The Phone House ska enligt hemsidan börja sälja iPhone 4 i 40 butiker runt om i landet. Butiken på Kungsgatan 3 i Stockholm har nattöppet 00.01 till 01.00 medan övriga butiker verkar ha normala öppetttider. Man ska kunna välja på Telia och Tele2.

Nu börjar priserna komma från de olika operatörerna.

[Uppdaterad 29 juli] Halebop har också lagt ut priser. Halebop meddelar också att deras abonnemang säljs i Telias tre nattöppna butiker (Stockholm, Göteborg och Malmö) och även i The Phone House butik i Stockholm.

Tele2

[Uppdaterad 29 juli] Tele2 har lag ut priser för iPhone 4 nu, här är 16 GB och här är 32 GB.

I USA har Library of Congress deklarerat att jailbreak är ok att göra under rätten till ”fair use”. Vad Library of Congress fokuserade på var om jailbreak var ett brott mot Apples copyright eller fair use och de kom alltså fram till att det inte var något brott.

Ars Technica har skrivit bra om detta:

The most surprising ruling was on ”jailbreaking” one’s phone (exemption number two), replacing the company-provided operating system with a hacked version that has fewer limitations. Make no mistake: this was all about Apple. And Apple lost.

”Apple is not concerned that the practice of jailbreaking will displace sales of its firmware or of iPhones,” wrote the Register, explaining her thinking by running through the ”four factors” of the fair use test. ”Indeed, since one cannot engage in that practice unless one has acquired an iPhone, it would be difficult to make that argument. Rather, the harm that Apple fears is harm to its reputation. Apple is concerned that jailbreaking will breach the integrity of the iPhone’s ecosystem. The Register concludes that such alleged adverse effects are not in the nature of the harm that the fourth fair use factor is intended to address.”

Vad gäller den lilla del av jailbreak som kräver copyrightskyddad kod från Apple säger Library of Congress:

And the Register concluded that a jailbroken phone used ”fewer than 50 bytes of code out of more than 8 million bytes, or approximately 1/160,000 of the copyrighted work as a whole. Where the alleged infringement consists of the making of an unauthorized derivative work, and the only modifications are so de minimis, the fact that iPhone users are using almost the entire iPhone firmware for the purpose for which it was provided to them by Apple undermines the significance” of Apple’s argument.

Jailbreak när det gäller iPhone handlar om att knäcka Apples spärrar mot att kunna installera egna program på telefonen, program som inte Apple godkänt.

I praktiken gör detta beslut inte så stor skillnad, men det är en viktig principiell seger för rätten att hacka en produkt man köpt och att det inte går att likställa med annan olaglig verksamhet som t.ex. piratkopiering.

Nu är priser för iPhone 4 släppta och det ser ut som att iPhone kommer att bli obunden i Sverige.

I ett pressmeddelande som gått ut till media men inte ännu finns på Apples hemsida står det:

iPhone 4 will be available without a contract for a suggested retail price of SEK 5.995 inc VAT (SEK 4.796 ex VAT) for the 16GB model and SEK 6.995 inc VAT (SEK 5.596 ex VAT) for the 32GB model through select Apple Authorized Resellers. A new iPhone 3GS 8GB will be available without a contract for just SEK 4.995 inc VAT (SEK 3.996 ex VAT).

Vi tolkar formuleringen ”without a contract” som att telefonen är olåst likt den i England. Som synes finns även priserna med:

• iPhone 4 32 GB (utan kontrakt): 6 995 kr inkl moms
• iPhone 4 16 GB (utan kontrakt): 5 995 kr inkl moms
• iPhone 3GS 8 GB (utan kontrakt): 4 995 kr inkl moms

Nu återstår det att se vilka priser operatörerna kommer att erbjuda.

Nu är det klart att iPhone 4 lanseras fredagen den 30 juli i Sverige.

Som en del av Apples presskonferens igår om antennproblemen i iPhone 4 berättade Steve Jobs även att Sverige och 16 andra länder som tidigare bara haft ”slutet av juli” som preliminärt datum nu fått ett fast datum för lanseringen av iPhone 4.

Inom den närmaste tiden borde datum för förhandsbeställningar hos de svenska operatörerna samt priser och abonnemang presenteras.

Den vita modellen ska börja säljas i slutet av juli i begränsad upplaga enligt Jobs, men det är oklart om den kommer till Sverige direkt.

Som vanligt bör de som är rädda om jailbreak och upplåsning avstå från att uppdatera tills det klart framgår att det är ok att göra det.

Som sista stora mobiloperatör i Sverige ska nu Tele2 börja sälja iPhone i och med lanseringen av iPhone 4.

Sedan tidigare säljer Telia, Telenor och 3 redan iPhone i Sverige men Tele2 har hittills inte valt att ha iPhone i sitt utbud, något som alltså ändras nu när iPhone 4 lanseras. Än så länge är informationen knapphändig, men det finns en dedikerad iPhone-sida hos Tele2.

När iPhone 4 lanseras i Sverige är fortfarande oklart. Apple fortsätter att ange ”slutet av juli” utan att närmare ha specificerat det. Det finns ett rykte om 28 juli, men det är osäkert hur mycket det går att lita på. iPhone 3GS lanserades den 31 juli förra året.

iPhone 4 släpps den 24 juni i USA, men redan nu har några lyckliga beställare fått sina exemplar levererade. Samtidigt börjar recensionerna av iPhone 4 komma in.

Overall, the iPhone 4 outclasses pretty much every smartphone on the market in terms of industrial design. It just comes off like a far more expensive device, like a Mobiado or Vertu — but better designed. And it’s not just the way the phone looks; the materials feel good — premium — in your hands. The first few days we had our test unit, we were definitely freaked out about dropping or losing the phone, and some of that had to do with the fact that it’s just a really beautiful device to use and hold.

Even though sirens were wailing behind us and we were surrounded by chatty shoppers, it was easy to hear our party on the other end, and they could hear us perfectly (unless we were lied to).

But what is it like? Well in truth, it’s actually a teensy bit amazing. Yes, we’re a little numb to the PR speak about how game changing it is, but there’s still something deeply sci-fi about dialing up a friend and being able to hold this thing in your hand and have a video chat. We did a call with Apple’s Greg Joswiak while he was in Paris (see the image above), and when he walked outside and flipped the camera to show us the Eiffel Tower, it was a legitimately weird experience — a ”you are there” moment.

Batteritiden:

This is a big one for many people, and we have some fairly surprising news to report. The battery life on the iPhone 4 has been outstanding thus far, exceeding our expectations for longevity during testing.

Once the rest of the team has their iPhones in hand, we’ll do some hardcore battery life testing and see what we come up with, but we think under pretty active use, the iPhone 4 blows Apple’s previous generation phone out of the water, and makes a lot of the competition look downright needy.

Och så till slutsatsen:

We’re not going to beat around the bush — in our approximation, the iPhone 4 is the best smartphone on the market right now. The combination of gorgeous new hardware, that amazing display, upgraded cameras, and major improvements to the operating system make this an extremely formidable package. Yes, there are still pain points that we want to see Apple fix, and yes, there are some amazing alternatives to the iPhone 4 out there. But when it comes to the total package — fit and finish in both software and hardware, performance, app selection, and all of the little details that make a device like this what it is — we think it’s the cream of the current crop.

iOS 4 är gratis för alla iPhone- och iPod touch-modeller som stödjs och innehåller ett stort antal förbättringar såsom mappar och multitasking men även massor av andra små förbättringar (läs mer om det här).

iOS 4 fungerar på iPhone 3G och 3GS samt iPod touch från 2008 och framåt. Men det är bara iPhone 3GS och iPod touch från 2009 som får multitasking, bakgrundsbild och stöd för bluetoothtangentbord.
